Club Duathlon 11/5/03

Top

The first club duathlon for 2003 at Oakbank saw a small field of? 9 competitors turning up to race in perfect autumn weather. The course was set for: 4km run/12km bike/2km run. Zac and Matt took an early lead in the run, closely followed by Andrew K. The three were then well placed in the cycle leg to continue on well to the fore of the rest of the field. Matt’s extra bike training paid off here though, as he took a strong lead which saw him finish the last run in first position with Zac coming in second and Andrew placing third. Alan had to pull out after the bike leg due to a leg injury, while Carl continued on into fourth place, followed closely by Digby.

‘TAYLOR WINS’

The last club tri to be held at the Woodside town pool for this season, saw a small field of 7 competitors turn out at 5.00 p.m. for the long course. Because of the low numbers it was decided to change the format of the race from a handicap event to a wave start. Mark Taylor surged away in the swim, and gained such a strong lead that he held off the rest of the field all the way through the event, to finish in 1st place. Andrew Ketteridge who exited the water in 5th place made up for his slowish start with the second fastest bike leg and the fastest run leg to place 2nd overall. Digby Ambrose who made a late entry on the day came through well to finish in 3rd place, only 6 seconds behind Andrew. In the short course there were only 2 competitors, Alex Wilson and Zac Elliot. Alex was first across the line, but Zac won overall with the fastest time. A club BBQ was held at the Cox’s house to wind up the day’s event.

FEBUARY TRIATHLON: 9/2/03

Top

The club’s Febuary triathlon at Woodside was one of the best attended in a long while.? The weather conditions were perfect and tribesters made the most of them. In the 400/13/4 course there were 15 competitors, in the 200/6/2 course; 8 competitors, and in the mini; 4 competitors. The two main courses were run as one event under a handicap system, creating a field of 23, which led to some close and intense competition. Carl Rofe was the outright winner, taking the whole field by surprise and knocking some 7 minutes of his last club tri time!!!!!! In second place was Asha Ketteridge, competing in her first club tri event, with third place going to Ruth Tupper. Peter and Sarah Wheeler had an interesting duel , starting off on the same handicap time, and finishing? the run, neck to neck, to place equal 15th.? In the mini? course, Ewan? Tupper took out an easy first place, followed in by Amalia Wilson and Ian Cox, and then by Katie Cox, who elected not to run, and instead did 4 laps of the bike leg. The club should be well primed for the Sam White triathlon next Sunday.

JANUARY TRIATHLON: 5/1/03

Top

There was a good turnout for the first tri of 2003, which was held at the Woodside ‘Onkaparinga pool. The senior numbers in the long course were down from the Xmas tri, but the junior members of the club turned out in force to compete in the short and the mini courses. The club also gained three more new members, Andrew and Asha Ketteridge, and Guy Schubert. The long course was run in two waves, with the second wave starting on a 10 minute handicap. First across the line was new member Guy Schubert, closely followed by Andrew Loose and Alan Rofe.

The short course was run in one wave with Alex Wilson coming in first, a good three minutes in front of a closely contested finish by Alison and Naomi Tupper, with Naomi just pipping Alison by two seconds.

In the mini course Amalia Wilson took out the first position followed by; Erin Hicks, Ian Cox, and Katie Cox.

YEAR 2002

EVENT RESULTS 28th / 29th ? COMPETITIONS

Top

Club members performed extremely well over the weekend at Glenelg in both the Master?s Open Water 5 km & 2 km swim, and in the Aquathon held the following day. In the Master?s swim Helen Roach, Jenny Bailey, Scott Green and Don Murchison competed. Helen won the female 5km swim, while in the 2km swim, Scott and  Jenny came 3rd in their age groups.

In the Aquathon the next day a large contingent of club members turned up to compete.

Competing in the Kid?s Race were Monica Kato, Trent Kato, Amalia Wilson and Nicole Mentha, with Monica coming in first overall.

In the Short Course ? 0.400s/2.5r ? Adrian Mentha, Alex Wilson, Karen Mentha, Amanda Wheeler and Matthew Wheeler competed, with Amanda the 1st  female across the line, and Matthew the 3rd  male.

In the Age Group State Championship ? 0.800s/5r ? Mark Taylor, Chris Eastham, Julie Engelhardt, Jenny Bailey, Sarah Wheeler, Helen Roach, Zac Elliot and Andrew Loose competed.

As well as coming 1st in her age group, Helen was also 1st female overall. Jenny, Sarah, Zac and Andrew also won their respective age groups.

Not a bad weekend tally for our club and a great finish to 2002!!

CLUB XMAS TRI 2002

Top

The club had an excellent turnout for the Xmas triathlon and BBQ held at the Woodside town pool on the 15th December.  The weather was very hot, causing quite a few to tone down their pace some what during the run. There were two main events, a long course; 0.400s/13b/4r, and a short; 0.200s/7b/2r, plus a mini course. The long and short courses were run as one event under a handicap system. The overall winner was Zac Elliot, with Bruce Cox, second, and Allan Rofe, third.

Zac completed the short course in 23:10, with Adrian Mentha not far behind on 24:33, and Amanda Wheeler coming in on 28:14, while Bruce finished the long course in 49:51. Andrew Loose had the quickest run time of the day with 15:59.

In the mini course Monica Kato, Amalia Wilson and Ian Cox had a close battle, with Monica coming in first on 7:04, Amalia on 7:.08 and Ian on 7:17.

It was great to some of the clubs new members competing in a club triathlon for the first time; Adam Pearce and Rob Lewis, and there should be some keen competition at the next one scheduled for 5/1/03 when everyone should be starting to get serious about the triathlon season. We also saw the return off Griff Weste who has just recently been up in Borneo tackling a rugged endurance event.

At the same time as the Xmas tri was being held, Scott Green was up in Canberra competing in another Half Ironman, He came 5th out of a field of 900  - not a bad effort!!

The club had an excellent turnout for the 2nd triathlon of the season, and our 1st local one at the Onkaparinga pool, Woodside. The weather was just about perfect considering the forecast, and looking at the results it can be seen that there were several closely contested positions. The next triathlon, at the same venue, will be on the 15th of December and should provide some more close encounters as tribesters hone up their skills over the coming weeks. It will be the Xmas windup and social get together for the club. We?ll be having a BBQ, provided by the club, so all you have to do is bring along a salad and your drinks. Re the drinks, please do not bring along anything in glass [bottles, glasses, etc.] as you will not be allowed to bring this into the pool area!! Thanks to all who came along on Sunday to make this tri a success, especially to the non participants who volunteered as Marshalls and Timekeepers. There is also an Xterra/Duathlon on the calendar for 1/12/02, but this has yet to be arranged and we?ll keep you posted as to what?s going on there as the date gets closer.

Results of X terra: 8/9/02

Top

Club members and their supporters braved the cold and blustery conditions in Mount Crawford forest on Sunday for the 2nd club X terra of the year.

In the junior event Jack and Katie Cox put in a great effort, running the first four laps in good times before settling down to the hard slog on their mountain bikes in the bike section. Then in the last run, Jack surged ahead to win, with Katie coming in with a very presentable second time.

In the senior section, 8 tribesters turned up to compete. Alan Rofe teamed up with Bruce Cox, and Carl Rofe with Don Murchison, while Des Chabrell, Scott Green, Brett Hart and Mark Taylor all competed individually. The run started off with Scott, Alan and Carl all coming in one after the other. Scott took a quick toilet break, giving Alan the lead in which to hand over to Bruce. Don took off after him with only about 20 seconds separating them at the beginning, but he soon lost sight of Bruce who powered away from him into the forest. Meanwhile, Scott was back on the trail and made good time around the course overtaking Don in the second loop. By this time Bruce had finished his ride, and Alan took off to complete the last section of the run to ensure that they were the outright winners. Scott came in not long afterwards to take out first position amongst the individuals, followed by Carl to place his team second. Mark, Brett and Des took off on the ride in close proximity, but they soon spread out over the field, with Mark being the first rider back in, but due to the hour, he had to pull out of the race and head home. Next in was Des, while Brett came sailing in not long after, and they soon knocked off the last leg of the run, finishing off the day’s event in great form.

All in all, everyone had a great time, and the ever loyal supporters did a great job egging everyone on to the end of the race.

It’s likely at this stage that the next club event will be held at the Burnside pool, on the 6th October, so keep a look out on this page and we will keep you posted when we know for sure.
